When Certification Means Something, the Apparel Should Too
When you earn a General Formulations certification, you've done real work — hands-on training, real materials, industry-leading instruction. We built a custom ordering portal so every graduate leaves with embroidered apparel that shows exactly what they earned, right on their sleeve.
General Formulations has built one of the most respected training and certification programs in the graphics industry. Installers, designers, and shop owners come to their facility in Sparta, MI to earn certifications in vehicle wraps, window graphics, wall and floor applications, and more. These aren't participation certificates, they're earned through hands-on instruction, real materials, and guided practice from industry-leading experts.
So when GF came to us, the question wasn't just "how do we put a logo on a shirt." It was: how do we make sure the apparel reflects what the certification actually means?
What We Built Together
We set up a custom ordering portal exclusively for General Formulations' Training & Certification program. When a student completes a course, they can access the portal and order apparel that's built around what they've earned.
Here's how it works:
- Logo choice: Students can order with the General Formulations logo or their own company logo — so the apparel works whether they're representing GF or heading back to their own shop.
- Certification badge: An embroidered badge on the right arm identifies exactly what they're certified in — Installer, Windows Walls & Floors, Vehicle & Fleet, or Pro.
- Handled start to finish: GF covers the cost of the first shirt. Helmsman handles everything else — the portal, the ordering, the embroidery, and the delivery.
Why This Matters
A certification badge on an arm isn't just a design detail. It's a signal to clients, to employers, to anyone who sees it, that this person has done the work. That they've been trained on the right materials, by the right people, in real-world conditions.
Apparel like this does something a certificate on a wall can't. It travels. It shows up on job sites, in client meetings, and in the field. It becomes part of how a certified professional presents themselves every day.
That's the bar we try to build everything around at Helmsman.
Portals Are About More Than Convenience
The portal we built for General Formulations is a good example of what this tool is actually for. It's not just about making ordering easier (though it does that). It's about giving an organization a way to deliver apparel that feels intentional — where every person who receives it knows it was made for them specifically, not grabbed off a shelf.
If you run a training program, manage a team across multiple locations, or just want a better way to handle apparel ordering without it taking over your week, we'd love to talk about what a portal could look like for you.
